Train to Busan: Review

Train to Busan told a story about Seok Woo (played by Gong Yoo), a father and financial manager who was on his way to meet with his ex-wife in Busan, because their daughter Soo An (Kim Su-an), wanted to see her mother as her birthday gift. Father and child were heading to Busan by Korean Train Express (KTX). At first, the journey was going well until a girl who had been infected with the zombie virus got on the train. One of the train’s officers was trying to looking for help, but she was too late because the girl had already bitten her neck, and slowly but surely, all of the passengers on the train were becoming zombies. Seok Woo and Soo An were trying to escape from the zombie’s euphoria, and looking for a way off the train, going from one carriage to another. Other than Seok Woo and Soo An, several other passengers were also trying to escape, and eventually they all got together. They were Sang Hwa (Ma Dong-seok) and his pregnant wife Sung Kyung (Jung Yumi), a baseball player called Young Guk (Choi Woo-shik), and his girlfriend, Jin Hee (Ahn Sohee). The small group banded together against the zombies, while they continued to look for a way to escape the train. Their situation was complicated by the fact that some people who hadn’t yet been attacked by zombies drove them away to move to another carriage. Some passengers even accused them of already being infected by the zombie virus, which wasn’t true. The antagonist was Young Suk (Kim Eui-sung), who was trying to save himself by sacrificing other people. Train to Busan was one of the best movies ever! Spoilers!

Seok Woo and his little troop of fellow passengers were struggling to find the way to escape the train. They were going from one carriage to another, armed with makeshift weapons such as newspapers, a lot of papers, and duct tape. When the train was passing through a long tunnel, it got dark on the train. The zombies couldn’t see anything, and that was when Seok Woo and the rest of passengers could sneak up on the zombies and had the best chance of escaping with their lives. Sang Hwa was the first one in the group to be taken. He was bitten by one of the zombies, and was willing to be used as bait for the zombies so that Seok Woo and the rest of the passengers could flee to another carriage. Sang Hwa sacrificed himself, even though his wife didn’t want to let him go. Meanwhile, Jin Hee was also bitten by the zombies in front of Young Guk. Young Guk wasn’t willing to leave Jin Hee, and he ended up getting bitten by Jin Hee, who was already becoming a zombie. One of the saddest parts from Train to Busan was when Seok Woo died. When Seok Woo was running from the zombies with Soo An and Sung Kyung, they came across Young Suk, who was already halfway to being one of the zombies. He was trying to attack Soo An, and Seok Woo protected her, but ended up being bitten by Young Suk. Eventually, Seok Woo realized that he would become one of the monsters. He refused to risk hurting Soo An and Sung Kyung, so he decided to throw himself off the train and died. It may not be clear to some people just what caused the zombies’ appearance. In the middle of story, there was a slight clue about the cause. It was said that the cause of the zombie outbreak was a biochemical gas leak, which came from a company that Seok Woo was an investor in. The end was a scene where Soo An and Sung Kyung were walking together, passing a tunnel where military personnel were guarding the border from the zombies. Soo An crying and singing to prove to them that she wasn’t a zombie. Train to Busan was more than just a zombie movie, it was also a story about family and struggle. If you are looking for an exciting action thriller, make sure that Train to Busan is on your movie list! It’s highly recommended and well worth the watch.
