Daesung’s Schedule: Building Controversy And Making A Comeback As A Singer
In July 2019, Channel A discovered that a building in the famous Gangnam area was being used for illegal business such as providing prostitution and adult entertainment services. Daesung was reportedly the owner of the building. He purchased the 8-stories building in November 2017 for 35 billion KRW before his military service enlistment. The basement and 5th to 8th floors were suspected of being used for illegal purposes. At daytime, those suspected floors were dark and closed with iron doors, but as night approached, women and men in luxury cars arrived and went to the suspected floors. Daesung, through his real estate agent, denied the accusation. As the building owner, his real estate agent stated that he has nothing to do with his tenants’ business operations. The agency added that the tenant provided a business license at the time the contract was being signed. In November, the Korean National Tax Service (NTS) issued a bill that required Daesung to pay a total of 1.2 billion KRW: 1 billion KRW for property tax and 0.2 billion KRW for acquisition tax. Several business establishments in Daesung’s building were listed as a restaurant but provided illegal entertainment services, thereby evading additional taxes. Starting from November 17th, 2019, all floors, except for the first and third floor, were being demolished. All of the floors were previously suspected of hosting illegal business. In early January 2020, Daesung was cleared of all charges of illegal business in his building. After reviewing his documents and testimonies, the police decided against making charges in the investigation. Police continued to investigate the business owner and employees who have worked in the building for violating the Food Sanitation Act and Anti Prostitution Act.
